Turmeric and Curcumin
Is anyone else obsessed with Turmeric right now.
I love it and I fell in love with it when I lived in Bali. This lovely lady would come to our house and make us fresh Jamu everyday.
JAMU - As its known in Indonesia, is a health elixir drink that everyone in Indonesia swear by to keep you, in their words “Kuat”- Strong.
The drink is made from turmeric root which is grated then the juice sqeezed from it, lemon juice and honey, it's a very yellow potent drink.
I drank it everyday as I was told it would make me a strong mother.... who wouldn't! Little did I know at the time that turmeric is one of the most powerful herbs for fighting and potentially reversing disease..
The Jamu Lady
Jamu Lady. Actually they sell a lot of different types of Jamu. In Java it is an elixir of health...
Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow color. It has been used in Indonesia and India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.
Turmeric and curcumin are powerful antioxidants. The main reason antioxidants are so beneficial, is that they protect our bodies from free radicals. Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects. It neutralizes free radicals on its own, then stimulates the body's own antioxidant enzymes.
Curcumin boosts levels of the brain hormone BDNF, which increases the growth of new neurons and fights various degenerative processes in the brain. So I am so happy that it is in the liquid supplement that I take everyday and just love, its a powerful concoction of adaptogen herbs.
A Few Positive effects of Turmeric
The Arthritis Foundation has many studies in which turmeric has reduced inflammation.
This anti-inflammatory ability might reduce the aggravation that people with arthritis feel in their joints.
Turmeric is thought of as a pain reliever. The spice is reputed to relieve arthritis pain as well.
Studies seem to support turmeric for pain relief, with one study noting that it seemed to work as well as ibuprofen (Advil) in people with arthritis in their knees.
Improving liver function
As I said before Turmeric has been getting attention recently because of its antioxidant abilities.
The antioxidant effect of turmeric appears to be so powerful that it may stop your liver from being damaged by toxins. This could be good news for people who take strong drugs for diabetes or other health conditions that might hurt their liver with long-term use.
Its important that in this fast passed world we live in, where we are all subjected to oxidative stress from the over busy over stimulated lives we live, and where our food is not being grown like it use to be and is often sprayed then held on storage for weeks at a time. so the nutritional value of our food is very different to what it use to be.
We need to Address the toxicity in our body.
