Why do you practice Yoga, or want to be practicing yoga?
Yesterday I was out walking my dog, and I thought to myself, why do I do yoga?
So I thought Id open it up to you and ask why do you do yoga or why were you attracted to yoga.
Most beginning students will tell you they got into yoga to alleviate back pain, relieve stress, or become more flexible—all perfect reasons.
For me after all these years and thousands of hours of practicing yoga, studying yoga, reading book after book about yoga and the anatomy of yoga, and continually looking for different people to inspire me, and there are many, the single reason is
"Yoga makes me feel good."
It's relaxing. It's energizing. It's strengthening. You feel better at the end of a class than before you began, and life runs more smoothly when you maintain a consistent discipline than when you don't. I think Yoga enhances your experience of life. It changes your perspective on what is important to you and your concept of how you would like to live your life. You start seeing things differently, with less distortion - which results in more peace of mind, better health, more enthusiasm for life, and an ever-growing sense of inner well-being.
Yoga will make you stronger - There is no doubt about it, yoga is a full body workout, targeting all the muscles of the body with both static holds and dynamic movement. I love the fact that you are using your own body weight and therefore building functional strength in areas where you really need it.
You learn to Breath well - Our breath and emotions are connected in a feedback loop. Yoga brings awareness to when our emotions are affecting our breath and also yoga breathing allows us to calm our emotional state. The more you can connect with the breath the clearer you will be in your emotions and in your decision making of choices etc.
Yoga gives you good posture - Your head is like a bowling ball its big round and heave! When its balanced directly over the spine it takes much less work for your neck and back muscles to support it. But when it is pushed slightly forward or your body slumps pushing the head forward, the pressure is huge. Its no wonder we get tired and feel pain. I love how yoga bring an awareness to your posture, how you carry yourself. Through practicing asana and breath you naturally work on correcting your posture.
Wow!! So why isn't everyone practicing it. Well Yoga is a discipline and something that you just need to make time for. I think planing is everything and practicing at the same time each day or each week going to the same classes helps. As Winter is setting in, its even more important to make the commitment.
