Twists - keep the mobility and length in your spine
Twists in yoga are often described as an aid for digestion. It is important to realize what that actually means! Twists are great for creating movement in and around our organs (mobility and motility). So in terms of helping our food being moved along.. twists are great.
In the Yogi sphere we are known for doing alot of twisting and wrapping and some will say putting our bodies into pretzel like poses. We do Twists whilst sitting, we twist like the pohto below whilst in a warrior lunge pose and so on and there are a lot of reasons to this.
BKS Iyengar, describes twists as a "squeeze-and-soak" action: The organs are compressed during a twist, pushing out blood filled with metabolic by-products and toxins. When we release the twist, fresh blood flows in, carrying oxygen and the building blocks for tissue healing.
Twists are also great when you have been sitting all day at a desk or over a steering wheel and your back is feeling tight. We often dont realise how tight our hips and back get from just sitting.
Twists stretch and strengthen the back muscles which can provide serious relief from the back pain caused by everyday life. As we get older and start to live a more sedentary life, we are risking losing mobility in our joints, and strength and mobility in our spine.
With a regular practice of yoga twists, there are some clear benefits to these same joints and soft tissues. Not only do you maintain the normal length and resilience of the soft tissues, but you also help to maintain the health of the discs and facet joints.
